For my thought today I wanted to discuss the importance of remembrance and what it means to remember. In my Sunday School lesson we had an interesting discussion about the differences between the words in the Sacrament blessing of the bread vs the wine/water. The first blessing is focused on the recipient taking upon them the name of the lord and keeping his commandments, while the second blessing is focused on remembering.
This got me thinking about what it means to remember. I mean, it seems obvious to me that it refers to not forgetting, or keeping available for recall. However, I decided to do a little digging into what the Hebrew word for remembrance would be and if it had extended meaning to learn form. Now I'm no expert in Hebrew, so this is purely some trusting what other sources online have to say. It appears that ZACAR is used to convey this concept. It can be translated as:
- Remember
- Keep in mind
- Make mention of
- Commemorate
I felt like this added some value to my understanding, since in my typical view of remembering, I could remember the good someone else had done, but still fail to pay it forward. But I do believe in the context of remembering the Lord that it's a combination of these various meanings. If I'm keeping in mind the Atonement of the Savior and living in a way to commemorate His gift to me, while making mention of Him as the reason when others should ask why I do the things I do, then I believe I am remembering as I should to reap the promised blessings spoken of upon the condition of remembering in the Sacrament blessings.
What does remembering mean to you? How do you go about remembering the Lord?
